はるか昔の学生時代に都内の小劇場でこの映画を見て衝撃を受けた。
ずっとこの映像を探していました。映画の題名を忘れてしまったので長い間不明でしたが、やっと見つけた。本も出ていた。

これってイームズ・チェアで有名な家具デザイナーのチャールズ・イームズと彼の奥さんによって脚本が書かれ監督された教育映画でした。ＩＢＭが資金協力している。
Powersとは「力」の意味ではなく数学でいうところの「べき乗」の意味。
つまり１０のべき乗でスケールが上下するといった意味。
シカゴのミシガン湖の湖畔でピクニックをしているところから、宇宙空間へとずんずんズームアップして宇宙の果てまで行ったあと、今度はものすごい勢いでズームインしてピクニック中の男の手の中からミクロの世界に突入して原子から素粒子に至る・・・・途方もない旅。
３６年前の未だＣＧが無い時代の作品ですが、いま見ても優れた映像ですね。はじめて観たときの感動がよみがえってきます。

Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only a s a speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds.
